Las Vegas is the largest city in the State of Nevada, and is known internationally as one of the premiere gambling and vacation destinations in the US. Marketed as the "Entertainment Capital of the World", Las Vegas is a relatively young city, established in 1905 and officially becoming a city in 1911. It is located in southeast Nevada near the borders of California and Arizona.

Las Vegas ("The Meadows") had its origins in the mid- to late-1800s as a transportation stop on the western routes to Los Angeles due to its proximity to a relatively large amount of water in what is essentially the middle of the Mojave Desert. Gambling has been a part of Las Vegas history for most of its existence. The world-famous Las Vegas Strip was established in the 1940s with the construction of the El Rancho Vegas Hotel-Casino.

The city's economy is almost exclusively based on tourism. In addition to gaming revenues, Las Vegas is the home for many conventions throughout the year that bring tourists from around the world to the city.
